Description
The cultivation of these fruits has ancient roots in the Trapani countryside.
The yellow alcamo melons, amongst the melons, are a local variety of the cucurbitaceae which is increasingly difficult to find. These melons, with their typical wrinkled yellow rind, are not only delicious to be enjoyed over dinner thanks to their characteristic sweet flavour but they are also used as an ingredient in typical Sicilian recipes, such as granitas and ice cream.
These melons are also called winter variety because they are harvested during the summer and last until Christmas.
In Italy this fruit is served as an appetizer served with Parma ham and black pepper.
